    The Chinese Academy of Engineering announced the list of newly elected academicians in 2011. Professor Gao Wen, leader of the AVS Workgroup, was elected as an academician of the Information and Electronics Engineering Division of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

    The AVS Open Source Community was officially open to the public, providing a "one-stop" service for enterprises and users to obtain AVS encoding, transcoding, and decoding of software source code. Since the AVS Open Source Community was launched, open-source technicians engaged in audio-visual related technologies have had a unified technology sharing and communication platform.

    The 37th AVS Workgroup Conference hosted by Xinjiang Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences was held in Urumqi from June 22 to 26, 2011. A total of 70 representatives from 29 members attended the meeting. A total of 31 proposals were received at the meeting, and 20 output documents were formed.

    Six national standards for terrestrial digital TV receiving terminals, including General Specification for Digital Terrestrial Television Receiver and General Specification for Digital Terrestrial Television Set-top Box, will be implemented on November 1, 2011. The General Specification for Digital Terrestrial Television Receiver and General Specification for Digital Terrestrial Television Set-top Box stipulate that, from the date of implementation, digital terrestrial TV terminal products shall support GB/T 20090.2-2006 (i.e. AVS standard) or GB/T 17975.2 (ie MPEG-2 standard), and shall support AVS standard one year after the standard is issued. From the date of the promulgation of the standards, the manufacturers can independently choose standards such as AVS or MPEG-2 as the case may be, but the AVS standard must be supported one year after the promulgation of the standard. As all digital TV sets must be equipped with terrestrial wireless TV reception, AVS will be built into all TV sets sold and purchased in the Chinese market within a year, and the set-top boxes purchased by families that already own TV sets to receive digital terrestrial TV will also be equipped with AVS.

    The results of the AVS Awards 2010 were announced: XAVS Development Team (Li Fujiang, Wei Lixia, Wang Lei, Cong Honglei, Fu Wenfang, Zeng Chao, and Chen Jianwen), AVS 3D Team of Peking University (Wang Ronggang, Dong Shengfu, Wang Zhenyu, Chen Jianping, and Zhang Zhebin), and Lossless Audio Coding Standard R&D Team (Shu Haiyan, Yang Xinhui, Qu Tianshu, Yu Rongshan, Huang Haibin, Zhang Tao, and Dou Weibei) won the AVS Award this year.

    The AVS Award 2010 was announced, and the XAVS Development Team, the AVS 3D Team of Peking University and the Lossless Audio Coding Standard R&D Team won the AVS Special Contribution Award 2010. At the closing ceremony of the 36th AVS meeting, Professor Gao Wen, leader of the AVS Workgroup, Professor Yu Lu, leader of the AVS Video Task Force, and Professor Hu Ruimin, leader of the AVS Audio Task Force, presented certificates and bonuses to the representatives of the winning teams in recognition.

    The 36th Meeting of AVS Workgroup was held in Ningbo from March 31 to April 1. This meeting was hosted by Ningbo University. 82 representatives from 39 members attended the meeting. A total of 23 proposals were received at the meeting. After two days of deliberation and discussion, 23 output documents were formed. At this meeting, the persons in charge of the task forces and workgroups were appointed.

    Hunan Zhuzhou Shengping Wireless Digital TV Network Co., Ltd. tendered 70 channels of AVS TV programs, and replaced the original MPEG2 set-top boxes with AVS set-top boxes.

    Hunan CATV tendered 44 channels of AVS transcoders and 20 channels of encoders, which opened the prelude to the large-scale application of AVS at the provincial level.

    AVS industrial application has gone abroad. During the bidding of digital terrestrial TV in Laos, Yunnan Wireless Digital TV Culture Media Co., Ltd. tendered 66 AVS coding equipment for application in Laos' Savannakhet, Pakse, and Luang Prabang provinces. From December 16 to 18, 2010, the 35th Meeting of AVS Workgroup was held in Tencent headquarters in Shenzhen. 87 representatives from 39 members attended the meeting. A total of 29 proposals were received, and 20 output documents (N1752-1771) were formed after deliberation and discussion during the 3-day meeting (4 days in the video group).
